FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions)

Q: Do I have to take my clothes off?
A: Not necessarily. A massage can be performed through the clothing and/or sheets depending on the needs or comfort level of the client. Some techniques require direct contact of the skin; however, the client is always covered with a sheet (except for the area of body being massaged at that time). In-chair massage is performed on fully clothed clients.

Q: Will the massage be painful?
A: While some techniques can be deep, the massage should not be painful. The amount of pressure and techniques used are negotiated between the RMT and client to reduce pain during the massage. Self-care is also offered to the client to help reduce pain/discomfort after the massage.

Q: How frequently does one need a massage?
A: This question will vary depending on the client and/or condition. Some conditions require more frequent and shorter treatments. Many RMT’s will recommend massage at least once every 4-6 weeks for maintenance of tissue health.

Q: What is Swedish massage?
A: Swedish massage is the use of various techniques, generally accompanied by a lotion or oil, to increase circulation and subsequently decrease muscular/joint pain.

Q: Why do I need to fill out a Health History form?
A: This form is completed in order that the RMT can provide you with a safe, effective treatment. The information obtained during the Intake is entirely confidential. Written consent may be obtained by the client him/ herself, usually for the purpose of working collaboratively with other health care professionals.

Q: How do I know that the Massage Therapist is legitimate?
A: Anyone using the term Massage Therapist must be registered with the College of Massage Therapists of Ontario and must display their credentials in full view in the treatment area. Only a Registered Massage Therapist can provide a receipt for his/her services.
